I've previously been flamed for claiming this, but then they were probably scenesters. This is the rant/article/truth? on the similarties between these two amazingly annoying and infectious music genres.
Back at the turn of the century, there was no denying that Nu-Metal was huge. for a few months it became "cool" to be a "pikey"/"mosher" whatever. Bands like Limp-Bizkit, Linkin Park, Incubus, Papa Roach and other distorted american "depressed" kids came about ripping off KoRn and Deftones riffs, the two bands who were around but werent as accepted at the time. Soo that scene grew boring (thank fuck) after we had many attempts of trying to cash in on some simply terrible and inconsitent music. Then nothing happened.
Nothing in the mainstream's eyes anyway. In the underground scenes something new was taking off. Derived from Hardcore, punk-pop and death metal music (along with enough Iron Maiden riffs to fill a large fish warehouse) a new scene, full of more depressed american teens, except louder, more talented and with much much more eyeliner. It was eventually branded Metalcore.
But, one of the first bands to cash in managed to come from right under America's noses, well a small town in Wales actually. When Funeral for a Friend exploded, it opened up the doorway for another big cash-in, in terribly inconsistent yet highly acceptable music. Except this time it was without all the marketing, this one was just out to annoy the actual music fans.
Soon a huge following developed for bands like Avenged Sevenfold, Bleeding Through, Eighteen Visions, Atreyu and many more, and they all sounded just as shit as the nu-metal we were plagued with a few years before. These bands took a wide range of influences, but instead of doing something inventive and new with them, they made "Goffick" anthems that were poppier than a can of coca cola. Which of course, for the Record Labels meant an absolute goldmine had arrived at their feet.
Record Labels cashed in as much as humanly possible, see Roadrunner's recent takeover of Ferret Records. And now we're stuck with a huge scene of devoted fans and overated bands all making increadibly poppy songs but with the death metal riffs and without the promotion. Whats most annoying about these bands is that they're quite clearly holding themselves back so a wider audience can appreciate them. They're making such desperatley commercial songs so that any depressed "goffick" teenager can pick it up and maybe make them move a bit. And if you don't believe any of this, then why would we have already established superficial bands like lostphrophets trying to save their career by ripping off the very same scene as much as they possibly can (lostphrophets being one of the only bands to manage to both rip off nu-metal and metalcore in their career).
And now everyone is catching on. You can see tons of already well known bands changing they're image to be recognised as part of the scene, whether it be eyeliner, a haircut/style, tattoos or even being straightedge.
Eugh. just saying that word makes me shudder. As well as the rise and rise of this genre, it meant the bringing about of "xstraightxedgex" to a wider audience. What is the fucking point of that scene?! Sure, I understand that if you don't want to drink, do drugs or have casual sex (this is the minimal level of the scene I might add) then that is fine. But don't go making a fucking cult about it. We are plagued with enough labels already. We particuarly dont need another one which is the most elitest and superfical to come yet and where people get spat on if they "break edge" (to drink, take drugs, or have casual sex while "under oath" of straightedge.) That's not the way forward. just let kids be themselves and listen and do what they see fit.
Whats also very annoying is to see also is that far superior bands are getting branded with metalcore. Ironic itself when they started by ripping off death metal, who, luckily for them, are too indivisual and in their own worlds to give a flying fuck what some american eyeliner kids want to do to sell their music. But it annoys me when bands like Converge, The Dilligner Escape Plan and The Black Dahlia Murder get calimed to be of the same vein when, thsoe bands are not restraining themselves for anyone, they are at least honest enough (and possibly just good enough) to actually make music they want to listen to and keep doing it, and since they've been at it long before these kids came along, its possibly even more insulting.
But then, there is always going to be scenes like this. It's the same for britain, having "britpop" turn into "THE NME scene" over the last 10 years has been brutally annoying. And watching channels like MTV2 who when they first started played an amazing array of real alteniative music, shameless on what genre it hailed from, turn into bland corporate mating places, playing all the unwated aforementioned bands above, and only giving a couple of hours a week at very late, "out-of-the-way-of-the-trendy-kids" airtime to the bands and music that started that very channel.
But then, one more angle could be argued that, while the major labels are wanking over these revenue generating scenes, at least the bands who actually deserve the respect, although some sadly have to end due to lack of funds or other similar reasons, are doing what they want in their way, so that the trendy kids or "Goffick's" will neevr catch on to it, being such a wide amount of music that fits under that catogory.
end rant.
