'Flags Of Pride' is the new cassette compilation from Jokulhaups Records, celebrating a year of releasing music. Jokulhaups Records is a record label and promoter based in Leighton Buzzard and Milton Keynes set up by teenagers to promote their own music and other good music, with emphasis on being original and different from most of the music around today. The label is a none profit organisation, we do everthing independently and solely for the music. The A side of the cassette is a compilation of the best tracks from Jokulhaups releases over the past year and the B side is all un-released music from the years recording sessions, a taster of things to come. The compilation is an hour long and comes in a retro style cassette package for a very generous price.
The cassette features tracks from 'A Number Equal To X', the first band who joined the label and one of the most controversial acts to come out of the local scene for a long while. A.N.E.X, as they are often called is an anonymous electronic project which started as just drum machine and guitar shaped casio synth and recently broadened into a whole orchestra of alternative instruments. When three tracks from A.N.E.X. were released on a Split CD by Jokulhaups last year, the reaction from most people was something like ''What the fuck is this?'', sometimes in a good way and sometimes in a bad way, but it blew everyones minds. With its references to math rock, funk, prog and experimental music, A.N.E.X. is certainly something unique worth taking a listen to. The A side of the cassette features 'There Is A Random Number Generator On The Bomb', an important track in the beginning of Jokulhaups Records and the B side features the two of the newest A.N.E.X. tracks.
'567 G4RN3R' is the second act that Jokulhaups discovered. 567 G4RN3R is the music of Richard Garner and was originally created so that he could use it as a soundtrack whilst playing video games. It is mostly sample based euphoric dance music but shows great skill in blending music and in melodies. In some respects 567 G4RN3R is in the same boat as A.N.E.X., mostly electronic and terrifyingly fresh. With this in mind, three tracks from 567 G4RN3R were released on the same Split CD as A.N.E.X. and also caused quite a stur when first heard. The cassette's A side features the classics 'Infraction' and 'Deep And Chilled' from 567 G4RN3R's mini album 'The Light Beyond', which is a great collection of upbeat technological dance music. The B side of the cassette features some of 567 G4RN3R's more darker experimental moments with a two part piece about a failed relationship called 'Jitter Glitter' and a war soundtrack called 'ReWARfed'.
The third act featured here in the compilation is a dub reggae outfit from Bedford called 'Europica'. The name supposedly came from the uniting of 'Europe' and 'Africa' and in that respect describes the music. Europica is the work of bass player Peter Romanowski and his collaborations with friends, such as the opening track to the cassette, 'Will You Be My Brother' which has vocals and guitar from Jason Didner and brass sequenced by Ed Drury. Monkey Kettle magazine described Europica as ''a cheerful sunny day strut'' and a ''jazzy reggae lilt''. Bonzai magazine said''Europica plays music you could jump up and down and dance to or lay down and chill out to''. Europica has also earned plays on 209 Radio Cambridge, Kweevak Radio New Jersey and The Crunch show at Radio Free MK. The A side of the cassette features the beatiful instumental's 'The Trumpeter' and 'You Are The One', as well as the Jason Didner collaboration. For the B side it was harder to select tracks because Europica has such a diverse selection of music in repertoire but 'Bombay Boogie' was the first choice as it stood out for sounding as someone said 'like punjabi eastenders' with its asian origin. Then the sweet 'Summer Dub' was added with its heartful dub glory and also 'Whispers' which sounds like an 80's police movie soundtrack!
The last act to find its way onto the Jokulhaups roster is yet another solo artist. Kieran Durcan creates bar grooves, chill out, funk, drum and bass, techno and rock under the guise of 'Aglaziator'. Aglaziator's mini album 'Anarchy In The Hearts Of...' proved to be another radical effort to be added to the legendary Jokulhaups catalogue with its hard hitting diverse construction swallowing almost every style of music into one new object. The CD also features some awesome artwork from local artist Tom Taylor. 'The Martins Remix' a guitar instrumental included on the cassette, got considerable airplay through the year including as background music to Mk's Loud O Radio's presenter Georgie Strange. Monkey Kettle described Aglaziator as ''Bizzare, a zig zagging melange of tones and beats'', ''sinisterly peaceful'', ''kind of trippy'' and as a ''layered rattle bag of sounds''. Aglaziator's classic 'Fill Your Mind With Elevations'' which quickly became known as ''the song which sounds like a bullet being shot through one ear and out the other side'' is included on this cassette, as well as new rockier creations 'Interfere', 'Linked With Two Rubber Bands' and 'POW' a collaboration with longtime friend 'Anarki Panda' which has crazy sampled vocals featuring the line ''The batmobile's whipped wheels of steel'', what more could you want?
So this cassette really is a collection of the newest, freshest underground music around. Look over on the left side for details of how to listen to the artists and how to buy the cassette. ANEX, Europica and Aglaziator also feature on Dirty Zine's 'Pedestrian' Compilation available here. Our website will be down for a while as we are re-vamping it and adding alot more info, if you have any questions or want to tell us about your music then email us. Thanks for your time.
