Hey Well done guys, the gig was great. It was good to finally meet you Sharpie if not for long and to see what esquires was actually like. Smaller than I thought it was gonna be. Heres some of my thoughts of the band / CD at the moment:
Epideme: Probably my favourite band of the night, they were tight and had a good sense of energy, reminded me like Shellac maybe a little too much in places but for a young band, you gotta have a main influence to follow. My favourite track was the funky instrumental somewhere in the middle with the crazy drum breaks, wasnt all that keen on the singing although I could see they were really going for it and had the emotion / power going on with the call and response. The drummer was amazing, sounded powerful, those breaks were immense! Good dramatic finish to the set with the feedback n stuff but didn't nirvana do that some time back? I'm not too pleased with the recording on CD though, maybe you went to get it Lo Fi and a bit experimental but the drums sound like cardboard boxes, atleast do your amazing drummer justice and get a decent drum sound! lol.
Garret- where they the second band? Another tight well practiced band but I can't actually remember much of it. The singer had a good presence there on stage and they were moving and putting on a good show. I didnt like all this Hives-esque tie and suit wearing? whats that about? a good thing was the inclusion of a keyboard and effects to give it that variety, was that them with the keyboard? damn I can't remember. They were good though, don't get me wrong. Just can't remember anything. The track on the CD is pretty cool, the beginning reminds me of Franz Ferdinand, lol with the vocals, not sure if they will like that comparison?
Pandemonium: Just as I thought I was in for a night of total telecaster sounding clangy guitars, pandemonium brought some more variety which was nice. A young band let loose on the stage and they were pretty energetic, often though losing footing to their ability and energy and went out of time a bit but maybe that was the idea? I dont know. There was mogwai-esque delay sections and rising and fallings from them into spazzy heavy sections. The bass player has a great ability and gave some good licks to complement the guitarists weirdness. I don't know about the singing, it brought a strange feeling to it, in some ways it sounded bad but in other ways it sounded sinister and cool. Overall I think they are a young band with some good potential although not as tight as the previous two and should possibly change the structure to some songs which followed the delay bit, build up, heavy bit, delay bit format alot. Good on the whole.
The Beat Poet- unforntunatly I had to leave mid way into the set. I didn't enjoy this band too much but it wasnt because of their ability it was just that we had already had EPIDEME and GARRET and now I was subjected to more of the same brutal style of punk and I had had too much. I wasnt too fond of his style of singing either where he just seemed to say random outbursts. Having said that they were tight and the audience seemed to like them. They talked to the crowd a bit which was good, even if it was to name drop about steve albini? I havent really got into their track on the CD yet but im sure I will, I'll give them another chance seeing as I left before the end.
Oh well, I tried to be constructive! call me a negative bastard if you like!
The Cd is pretty cool, artwork and stuff well printed and well done. Favourite tracks on first listen: SVITU, Mydriasis, Europica, People In Planes, Revelation.
Cya.

Cheers for that Terry, constructiveness is a blessing and the only way to progress. I had a great night and was suprised by how many people turned up, enjoyed it, bought a cd, etc. I have a lot to say and I have quite a few pics so I'll say it when I've uploaded them all - give it a feeling of completion and all that. But yeah, if you're reading this and you went - thank you so so much for coming. This is just the begining...

We weren't name dropping Steve Albini (some audience chap was going on about Albini). We were talking about how "Albino" (as in blonde hair, pale skin and red eyes) is an insult in Bedford for some reason. Confusing.
Anyways cheers to the people who managed to stay behind to watch and help make it an enjoyable gig. We were all abit knackered and such from playing 3 nights in a row (in the fair and wonderful east midlands) and losing much sleep but i think we did ok.
A special thanks to the random dancer who joined us on stage for the rest of the set. It was BEZ-tastic.
