This is an idea that occured to me recently...
Basically, we record our favourite tunes of the moment onto a particular format (C90s are as welcome as shiny CD-Rs) and give them to another sodomite on this board, and they reciprocate by giving you one.
A mixtape, that is.
However you interpret that is up to you.

CD-Rs!
I don't have any blank tapes.
Plus, the quality is better. And CDs are easier to send through the post.
Why? BECAUSE I SAID SO!
Since Mike and Craig are swapping, do you wanna do a trade with moi, Druscifer?

3!?!??! Fuck yes! Why We Should Use Tapes: by Simon from Seachange... In this digital age you can now take a vast music library with you wherever you go, whether mp3s on your CD walkman or an Ipod with thousands of minutes of music merely a tap away. And don't get me wrong, I'm all for the digital revolution, the things is I'm a kid of the eighties and there's still a special place in my heart for the 45/90 minute axiom of the compilation tape. The love and care that goes into creating the perfect tape is far more than the effort required to list some files and crank up the burner while you go off and have a cup of tea. If it's wrong you'll have to tape over the offending song, and you'll only get a couple of chances to get it right before the quality deteriorates too much. That creates tension, which fuels the creative process; you really have to rise to the occasion. When its possible to just wipe the track and start over with the click of a button you don't have to think so carefully about which track goes where. Limitations are good and another one is the 90 minutes of the tape (broken up by the 45minutes per side). It's about the perfect length: it's a challenge to keep the flow of the tape going for the full time but it is achievable and its a set length (unlike the arbitary length of burned CDs and MDs which is all to often to long), so everyone's working within the same goalposts. The skilled compiler knows when he or she can cram another tune in on the end of the side or when to leave a gap to avoid the dreaded cut-off mid song- a major faux pas . And then there's the tracklisting: How you fit all the band and track names on to the tape inlay is an art form in itself (two solumns or freeflow?do you go over to the other side?ape band logos or use generic indie-kid handwriting?). There's no TImes New Roman or Arial here, or even worse the numerous frilly fonts that adorn most PCs' word-processing packages. Yes I'm an unashamed fan of TDK, Sony FX1, side A and B and having to use a biro to spool the tape out to untangle that twist, and to honour them here are my top five compilation tapes of all time: Title - Monsters Of Cock Vol. 1. Author - Dr Rainbotix A legend. Kicks off with Canned Heat's "Sic 'em Pigs", a statement of intent if ever there was one, and from there its a roller coaster ride through punk, funk, reggae, hip-hop and dirty rock: "Jack The Ripper", "The Funky 16 Corners", Daisy Chainsaw- "Sick Of Sex", "Ford Mustang", "Mathematics" by Mos Def, through to "Six Inch Gold Blade" and ending with Roy Bud. Full marks to the Doctor for getting Blood Sausage and Melody Dog on there, but highlight tune has to be "Animal" by New Kingdom. Title - Indiekidgarage Author - Rusty James One for the kids. An early Fall number, "Frightened" sets you up for surely the best second song on any compilation, "Hate The Police" by Mudhoney. This one sticks to it's theme and by god its all there, "Headache" by Big Black, TVPs, "Her Jazz", Dinosaur Jr's version of "Just Like Heaven", Live Skull, Pixies and GG Allin. Highlight: well it has to be "Hate The Police", guaranteed to get your gran beating her fist on the dashboard. Title - Hip Hop For Simon Author - Lucia Martinez If you start with "South Bronx" by BDP, well you've gotta have somewhere to go and boy she does. How about "Queens Palace" by Out Da Ville and Nas' "Represent" for tracks 2 and 3. Jungle Brothers, Ultramagnetics, Dialted Peoples and Handsome Boy Modelling School all vie for places on this tape but the highlight has to be "100% Dundee", the best thing the Roots have ever done. Title: Nirvana - In Utero / Afghan Whigs - Congregation Author: The Motorcycle Boy O.k. not strictly a compilation but this still counts because its a tape thats been stuck in my walkman for the best part of the last ten years, so worn it barely plays. These albums compliment each other perfectly and the gaps at the end of the sides are filled with hidden gems from The Didgits and a Peel session version of "Tonight" by the Whigs. Highlight: what else could it be but "Milez is Dead", the last song on Congregation. Title - Chicks For Free Author - Dr. Rainbotix The Doctor again, this time on a pure hip-hop tip. From the early Rawkus genius of "Universal Magnetic", "Soundclash" and "B-Boy Document", to the fucked up fire of Company Flow and The Arsonists, stopping by a few classics ("Flava in Your Ear", "Beat Bop") on the way. Highlight is the awseome Kool Keith spin-off, The Cenobites' "How The Fuck You Get A Deal". Sing it: "Your shit is whack/ How the fuck you get a deal." If only the Dr had recorded it louder.
